One Network to Run Them All

The City of Richardson devoted its resources to creating one high-speed, ultra-reliable network for every city function, including mission critical communication. It's a model that could save your region hundreds of thousands.

The City of Richardson is located just north of Dallas, Texas and is home to more than 100,000 residents as well as many of the world's largest telecommunications companies. Known for its technology talent, infrastructure and forward-thinking leadership, the City invested in a fiber optic network 15 years ago that charted a course to create an infrastructure that would support all phases of its technology needs, including mission critical public safety systems.

By focusing its budget into building a unified IP (Internet Protocol) infrastructure-rather than individual networks-Richardson has deployed a single, robust, ultra-high-speed, reliable network that is capable of meeting the entire City's current and future communications needs and in the process, is saving hundreds of thousands of dollars, while still providing top rate service and connectivity to its users.

"From day one, we planned to run all of the City's IT needs on our IP network," said Brian Davis, deputy CIO of Richardson. "The Airbus DS Communications team recognized this and understood our network infrastructure. They worked with us to get the best possible performance out of our LMR and 9-1-1 systems and maximize the benefits from our network."

Leveraging a single network that serves public safety and governmental applications has saved the City time, money and resources. For example, Richardson's IP network includes more than 125 network switches, which cost anywhere from $3,000 to $10,000 each. Multiple networks would increase costs significantly as they would require duplicate switches, routers, and other components.

City leaders say that the key to realizing the benefits of a single network is a system built on open standards-ones that can easily adapt, scale and meet a City's evolving needs. This includes public safety communications systems, whether it's LMR or 9-1-1 - or in Richardson's case, both.

Richardson selected Airbus DS Communications' VESTA™ Radio and VESTA® 9-1-1 solutions for their openness and compliance with industry standards. In particular, Airbus DS Communications' commitment to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) IP standards made it easy to adapt these systems to the City's network.

The use of a common IP network for both 9-1-1 and LMR is dissolving the siloes that have traditionally existed between these systems and their operation.
